Steve O'Neill

SteveWith over 20 years in the corporate world, traveling, sitting at a desk, and even being physically active, Steve found himself with low back pain and bad posture.  He was introduced to Pilates to help his back and overall fitness.  Back pain diminished with time and fitness levels increased to such a degree that it allowed him to return to his love of sports.  His running and biking improved and his ability to play racquetball, a sport he truly loved, was to a level where he was able to play without pain.

Steve's initial training took place in Boulder, Colorado.  Through teaching he found that using the breath to initiate muscle engagement and movement  allowed a person to experience the complete Pilates.

Changing from the corporate world into the non-profit world didn't relieve the stress on his back, so the need for Pilates continued.  Steve started using Pilates also as a stress-reliever from the intensity of raising funds to support operations.  Finding himself refreshed after working with Pilates he found additional energy to continue working long hours for non-profits.

Arriving in Salida, Colorado, Steve was asked to use his background in Pilates to start a studio.  Using his 40 plus years of sports as a background, he decided to gain additional education, in Pilates, through the PhysicalMind Institute in New York City.  Steve is a certified instructor in all levels of Mat and Standing Mat instruction as well as all levels of Equipment instruction and also Pilates rehabilitation.  Steve has used his business background to start and continue operating a successful Pilates studio.

Sonia Walter

sonypicSonia comes to The Pilates Studio with an extensive background in cycling.  She started in the Midwest where she raced with a women's team in Wisconsin, to cycling in Colorado where she would cover 7,000 miles a summer. Her love of being on the road developed her athletic background.  Steady weight lifting also developed her major muscles, yet her back, and especially her shoulders, would cause major discomfort during her rides.

Introduced to Pilates in 2003, Sonia saw the benefits of stretching and lengthening her muscles to enhance her athletic performance.  Pilates allowed her to sit more comfortably on the bike for many hours and gave her more power to spin.  It also negated the pain that used to reside in her shoulders during and after a ride.  She has since discovered trail running and mountain biking; Pilates has helped immensely with navigating difficult and rocky singletrack with no injuries by increasing her balance and strength.  She can now comfortably run and ride hours on her favorite trails with no pain or injuries.

Certified by the PhysicalMind Institute in 2004, Sonia sees her teaching as a way to help people understand and appreciate the movement possibilites of their bodies.  She hopes that each client can learn the joy of movement.  After giving her clients the ability to move more comfortably and from their core, she loves to give them a good workout!

She is currently pursuing advanced education through Balanced Body University, finishing the Reformer modules in fall of 2009 and the Tower/Cadillac module spring 2010.  Her goal is to be certified as a Master Pilates Instructor, which would allow her to teach other instructors.

Lisa Marie

lisapicLisa Marie has been an active athlete from middle school, through college, running at Western State College, NCAA National Champions cross country team in 2001, and track team in 2000 - 2002, and also on Oregon State Crew team in 1998. After years of competing in school she got more involved in outdoor activities, whitewater kayaking, trail running and mountain biking. She realized years of constant training, impact on joints, and build up of injuries that her body was becoming unbalanced and creating sore muscles. After a major ski injury in 2001 she looked for other activities that would find balance in her body. She finally discovered Pilates at The Pilates Studio in Salida and was so impressed in how it promoted so much awareness about her body that she incorporated Pilates into her life. Lisa Marie is a certified ACE personal trainer, certified ACA kayak instructor, and certified Pilates instructor from The PhysicalMind Institute. Lisa has completed her Recreation major and Kinesiology minor at Western State College in 2001. Lisa Marie moved back from Oregon in 2006 so she could be part of The Pilates Studio in Salida and enjoy the whitewater in Colorado with her husband Dave. Pilates has improved her kayaking and running tremendously and plans on enjoying these extreme activities for the rest of her life thanks to the power of Pilates!
